Stephen Maing is a Korean-American filmmaker and artist based in New York. His recent work in China looks at decentralized media and the
conflict between personal and political identity. HIGH TECH, LOW LIFE (working title) is a co-production of ITVS and follows the efforts of two self-styled
independent citizen reporters as they wander the country documenting under-reported news stories in China.
He is a 2011 Fellow of the Independent Feature Project Labs program, a 2010 Fellow of the Sundance Institute's Documentary Storytelling & Edit Lab, a grant recipient of the MacArthur Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, and Sundance Documentary Institute. In 2009 he received a Creative Promise Award Honorable Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival, a Best of Festival award at the 2003 New England Film/Video Festival and Best Short Film at the 2003 Slamdance Film Festival. In 2001 he received a LEF-Foundation grant to direct the film LITTLE HEARTS. Stephen works as a freelance director/d.p. and editor. Since 2010 he has been teaching summer classes in documentary cinematography and film production at the Massachusettes College of Art in Boston, MA. |
